I have majorly loved doing artist research for this project, as it is a fashion based project i have researched various fashion designers who link their work to an 'under the sea' theme. It was interesting to see how various designers take the same or similar concept and adapt it in their own distinctive way. The designers I have researched are who I have took inspiration from, for example their use of colours, fabrics and how they individually produce their garments.
The 1st designer I have researched is Christopher Kane; it was by pot luck I came across this designer and his beautiful work. Even though this collection I have researched into isn't based on anything under the sea, the way the garments have been produced link well to my under the sea theme of Marine invertebrates and what I have chosen as part of my design the 'Lettuce Sea Slugs'. My design for this project was heavily influenced by this collection because of the way the designs have been created for example the colours used and how the materials/fabrics have been handled. This designer is not one I am familiar with however I would with pleasure research him in future projects if his work links as his collections are futuristic which I personally love.
The oh so classic Chanel and their beautifully created collections are also who I decided to research into. I couldn't resist their work and finding they had produced an 'under the sea' themed collection was heaven to my eyes. As always Chanel is every subject to distinctive, no matter what era the clothes are produced in they could be worn whenever, past present and future. They are the definition of timeless and their spring/summer 2012 collection was no different. Their use of pearls and fabric choices against the colour scheme was perfect, the collection is almost futuristic in some aspects but with a hint of their own personal style. Chanel is my go to designer no matter what project I am on, somehow they have a collection that links wonderfully.
Monochrome is the colour theme MOO have asked for as part of my design, with one contrasting colour. Therefore I wanted to research this colour pallet and see what designers use these colours. I found collections by both Peter Pilotto and Mary Katrantzou. I love how these two designers have used the monochrome colour pallet for intricate prints, its shown me that the monochrome colour scale does work well with prints, especially if various shades are used. The images below are of my monochrome sheet.
As MOO have asked for a print I decided to research a designer who specialises their brand with bold prints; therefore I chose one of my favourite go to designers Peter Pilotto. His designs are always so beautifully created and his prints are amazing so detailed yet forward. As my project is based on 'under the sea marine invertebrates' I researched into Pilotto's collection based on 'under the sea' and even though he doesn't print a sea creature he has incorporated their lines and forms and the colour you would find under the sea which I love, simply because he has had a theme and transformed it using his own style which is prints.
This last image is another artist/designer I researched within my sketchbook. As MOO have asked for some fabric manipulation I decided to look for a designer who manipulates fabric, this is where I found Lainey Keogh, a designer who creates intricate garments by using her own methods of fabric manipulation.
